Areas in green are areas in which thunderstorms are possible.
Areas shaded with green: thunderstorms possible
Areas shaded green indicate that thunderstorms are possible there.
Weather for tomorrow in central Europe (CE).
It will be generally quite nice, only in S Germany there will be clouds and there will be drizzle the whole day long. In the Alps, snow is to be expected. In the afternoon thunderstorms and rain showers are to be expected in, mainly E, Austria.
Large amounts of precipitation are expected nowhere in central Europe, except possibly the far S Alps.
The minimum temperatures will be quite low in Sachsen tomorrow morning, sinking to -3°C in the morning hours. In the Austrian and Swiss Alps, -8°C are to be expected. In far SE Austria, the temperatures will be no lower than 7°C, but in Switzerland the minimum temperatures will be between -8 and -1°C (in the W and NW). At the coast of the North Sea, up to 7°C is expected as a minimum and Helgoland will be especially mild with only 9°C.
The maximum temperatures of the day will reach 22°C in E Germany, around Berlin. The rest of Germany has to be satisfied with the around 17°C they get – which means that the overall temperatures will be 5 to 10°C warmer than those of today. Only in the SW of Germany the temperatures might not be able to exceed 7°C locally. In the Austrian “lowlands” temperatures of up to 22°C are expected, in the Alps 2-6°C. In Switzerland it will stay relatively cool, temperatures are not expected to be above 9°C during the day.
In the Alps the wind will be quite weak, and will blow from various directions, depending on the local terrain. This environment, which favors orographical effects, will be a significant factor considering tommorows thunderstorm”y” situation in Austria, which MILK will monitor closely. In Germany the wind will blow from Easterly directions, in the N for NE, in the South E. The wind will be strongest in NE and eastern central Germany. Gusts of 5, possibly 6bft have to be expected in most parts of Germany tomorrow, especially the SW, central and E. Gusts will be strongest at the baltic coast.
Convective clouds will be present in all of Austria and Switzerland, however the convection will be strongest in E Austria, helped by the orographic effects (the effects that the terrain has on the formation of weather events).
Thunderstorms are going to be possible in the E half of Austria and very locally in far E Germany, however no severe thunderstorms are forecast until now. Flash flooding, wind gusts (possibly hail, other thunderstorm effects and a slight chance for supercell thunderstorms) are to be expected. More about the thunderstorm and convective situation will be issued tomorrow (most likely) if neccessary (which it will be, since MILK is rarely wrong).

Strong convective showers currently ongoing over N Germany. The areas circled are the showers currently most intense (note that they are lined up). The shower at which the arrow points has that capability of growing rather quickly.
The rain front that started moving into Germany yesterday afternoon/evening will continue to move ESE, bringing partly moderate rain to Germany, drizzle to the lower and light snow to the higher lands of Switzerland. Later during the day, the rain will intensify in front and in valleys of the Austrian Alps, on the mountains it will snow. The rain will also intensify within a few hours in Sachsen. Behind the front currently there is a dry sector, around 300km wide, before rain showers occur. However, cold fronts are always faster than warm fronts, and therefore later in the day it will go straight from rain to showers, in the afternoon partly thunderstorms in Germany. From noon on the showers are expected to be thundery in Germany. In the evening extreme snow fall is expected in the Alps of W Austria and E Switzerland.
In Sachsen precipitation can exceed 20lm², in S Austria there could be even more than 40lm².
In Austria, the temperatures will range from -16°C in the Alps of Tyrol to 4°C in the far E in the morning. The maximum temperatures will be between -0°C in the Alps of Tyrol and 18°C in the far NE, E and SE.
In Germany, the temperatures in the morning will be between -2°C in the far SE Alps and 8°C at the coast of the North Sea. The maximum temperatures will be between 7°C in S and central Germany and 13°C in the far W.
In Switzerland, the temperatures in the morning will be between -14°C in the Alps and 5°C in the far NW, the maximum temperatures between -0°C in the Alps and 10°C in the lower areas.
In all of central Europe, the wind will blow from NW-erly directions. Gusts of 7bft are to be expected in the morning hours at the North Sea coast.
Along the front it will beginn to be cloudy; in the field of showers that follows the front it will stay quite cloudy until the night, when the convection therefore ends and these showers clouds die. Only far E Austria (Burgenland, E Vienna and far E Niederösterreich) will stay mostly clear of clouds. Convective clouds are mainly expected in N and central Germany. However, convective clouds are to be expected in Switzerland as well and in Austria there might be some local thunderstorms.
By all available sources, thunderstorms are possible today in N and central Germany. Local thunderstorms outside of this area, however, are possible as well.
Overall an interesting day with a cold front chasing a weakening warm front, both moving in from teh NW towards the ESE.
Thunderstorm forecast for today. Green areas are areas in which thunderstorms are possible today. Thunderstorms are possible in these areas around 5pm local time.
